Joon Young Kim , assistant professor in the Department of Exercise Science at Falk College, has enhance his volunteer work with the International Organization for Health, Sports, and Kinesiology (IOHSK) and as a result of his efforts was recently awarded a President’s Volunteer Service Award bestowed by President Joseph R. Biden Jr. L’68. Kim was recognized at the award’s silver level for his more than 250 hours of volunteer service to IOHSK. Kim has served since 2019 as chair of IOHSK’s leadership development committee, a member of its conference organizing committee, and a fundraising and donor organizer among other roles. Read more.

Davidson Selected for Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors Distinguished Lecturer Tour
Cliff Davidson, Thomas and Colleen Wilmot Professor of Engineering, environmental engineering program director and director of the Center for Sustainable Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, was recently selected as the featured lecturer for the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors Foundation (AEESP) 2022-23 Distinguished Lecture Series. Davidson will present two different lectures during the tour. The first is titled “The Green Roof as a Complex System” and will focus on how the performance of a green roof can be modeled and measured in an effort to understand its benefits in built-up urban areas, using the example of an instrumented extensive green roof on the Onondaga County Convention Center in Syracuse. Liu Inducted Into National Institute of Food and Agriculture Hall of Fame
Zhanjiang (John) Liu, professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences and the University’s vice president for international strategy, has been inducted into the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Hall of Fame as the organization’s 2022 honoree. The recognition cites an individual’s contributions to that organization and work in support of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) strategic goals, including a commitment to the nation’s food, agriculture, natural resources and human sciences enterprises. Inductees are recognized for their research, education and career efforts extending NIFA’s mission of investing in and advancing agricultural research, education and extension to solve societal challenges. Faculty Members Schiff, Yung Recognized by Technology Alliance of CNY
Two Syracuse University faculty members have been honored for their research sector and teaching work by the Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY). The organization recognized Eric Schiff, professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Pun To (Douglas) Yung, associate teaching professor of biomedical and chemical engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS). Schiff was presented with the organization’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and Yung was recognized as College Educator of the Year. The awards were presented at the group’s recent 22nd annual celebration event. Read more.
Newhouse Professors Earn DHS Funding to Help Stem Extremist Content in Virtual Spaces
Two professors at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications have been awarded nearly $600,000 in funding from the Department of Homeland Security’s Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant Program. Kelly Leahy, assistant professor of television, radio and film, and T. Makana Chock, David J. Levidow Endowed Professor and director of the Newhouse School’s Extended Reality Lab, will study how media literacy can offer a method for mediating cognitive and emotional responses in an extended (virtual, augmented and mixed) reality environment.
