Led by Claudia Kinkela, this workshop will provide an overview of NEH programs and grant opportunities and focus on writing a competitive application for peer review. Claudia is Senior Program Officer in the NEH’s Division of Research, where she has served as the team lead for the NEH Fellowships Program for over a decade.
As part of this site visit, the NEH is offering the opportunity for a limited number of in-person one-on-one afternoon consultations for individuals with existing projects in development. The deadline to register for one-on-one consultations is February 19, 2024. Faculty with one-on-one consultations will be required to share a ½ to 1 page project description with the program officer at least one week prior to the workshop.
In-person attendance is strongly encouraged. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Morning presentations will be live-streamed via Zoom webinar for those who cannot attend in person.

The Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC) is a public-private partnership that is authorized to serve by the Department of Defense to promote the development and delivery of innovative medical technologies to improve the health and safety of military personnel, veterans, and civilians. MTEC is a 501(c)(3) biomedical technology consortium that is internationally-dispersed, collaborating with multiple government agencies under a 10-year renewable Other Transaction Agreement with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command..
Dr. Lauren Palestrini, Chief Science Officer
Lauren Palestrini, Ph.D., is the Chief Science Officer at MTEC, where she serves as the lead technology officer within the medical product development activities, oversees the development of technology solutions that will meet industry commercialization targets, conducts initial technology assessments, and maintains adequate coverage of military clinical needs. Dr. Palestrini is also working on generating external funding streams through fundraising. Dr. Palestrini earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, and a Doctoral Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Stony Brook University. Her graduate work focused on the development of a biodegradable, electrospun fiber mat for the topical delivery of a novel fibronectin-derived peptide for the limitation of burn injury progression. Until recently, she served as the Director of Research at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials at Rutgers University where she managed a cross-disciplinary set of research projects in support of the Department of Defense-funded Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) cooperative agreement within regenerative medicine. In addition, her prior experience includes process development at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, research and development at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products, and human resources at Deutsche Bank.
Kathy Zolman, Chief of Consortium Operations
Ms. Zolman’s responsibilities as MTEC Chief of Consortium Operations include management of all functions within consortium operations to include OTA execution, membership management, solicitation management, contracting, finance, marketing, and information technology oversight. She has an active role in customer relationships with military funding sponsors and membership. Previously Ms. Zolman was Director of Program Operations for MTEC, where she was an integral part in the growth of the consortium to over 600 members and awarded over $700M of government funding. Ms. Zolman has been instrumental in the startup, business management, day-to-day management, and planning for several collaborative initiatives at Advanced Technology International. She has over 20 years of progressive management experience in program and project management, business development, market research, and financial management. Ms. Zolman earned her undergraduate degree in International Business and Management from Penn State University and holds Spanish Minor from the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. She has a Masters of International Business Administration from the University of South Carolina.
Vice President for Research, Duncan Brown, and the Office of Research staff will host a Research and Creative Fall Social on Friday, March 22 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Lyman Hall’s first floor lobby.
This social offers faculty, staff, and postdocs space to take an afternoon away from their research and creative activities and enjoy a beverage, light appetizers, and social time with friends and colleagues.
The Office of Research’s Research and Creative Socials are come-and-go events, with no obligation to stay the whole time.
