Research funding can come from multiple, diverse sources, including federal funds, grants, sponsorships, corporate partnerships and other awards. Some sponsors cap the number of proposals Syracuse University may submit. For these opportunities, the University runs an internal competition to put forward its most competitive proposals.
If an opportunity is limited, you must go through the internal process before you may apply. Applying without clearance can disqualify your proposal — and others from the University.
The Office of Research posts open limited submissions to the Syracuse University Application Portal and the monthly Office of Research newsletter, and coordinate the internal selection. If you find a limited opportunity that is not posted, email LimitedSubmissions@syr.edu before you begin.
Limited SubmissionsSyracuse University’s internal grant programs provide researchers with institutional funding support. Programs include bridge funding to sustain research between external awards, seed grants for new research and creative activities and targeted support for resubmitting competitive external proposals. Additional opportunities fund team development for large collaborative projects and offer WRAP awards to assist with final book publication costs. Each program includes details on purpose, eligibility, award amount, and deadlines to help faculty identify the right funding resource for their research and creative endeavors.
Internal Grant ProgramsSponsored funding opportunities are available across disciplines through curated Pivot database searches, including arts, sciences, engineering, humanities, law and more. In addition, researchers can access national and international funding-related events, such as NSF and NIH conferences, as well as a wide range of Fulbright programs that support teaching, research, global collaboration and professional development. These resources connect faculty with external sponsors to advance research, scholarship, and creative work.
Sponsored Funding OpportunitiesPivot maintains a database of grants, fellowships, and other funding information from public and private, domestic and international sources.

NIH Grants and Funding Information
The Office of Research Development (ORD)’s mission is to help faculty secure external funding and resources in support of their research and creative activities. This support includes aiding faculty in proposal planning and development, facilitating team-based collaboration, and managing internal funding competitions, including both seed grant programs and externally funded limited submissions. ORD team members bring deep knowledge of external funders and stakeholders, provide strategic consultations to faculty, and serve as intellectual partners in the proposal development process. Additionally, ORD plays a pivotal role in catalyzing interdisciplinary collaborations across campus, multiplying the impact of individual researchers in pursuing solutions to the complex challenges of today’s world.
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) assists all members of the University community with the submission of proposals for external support of research, creative, instructional, and service activities. The office is responsible for assuring that submitted proposals conform to sponsor guidelines and University policies, and if funded, that projects comply with sponsor requirements and applicable University policies and procedures.
The Office of Foundation Relations creates partnerships between researchers and foundations to help fund and provide support for research projects. The office helps researchers connect with potential sponsors and supports securing grants.
