The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), operating under the Office of Research Integrity and Protections (ORIP), ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing animal welfare. The program adheres to the highest standards, including the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Animal Welfare Act, and AAALAC International accreditation.
IACUC Responsibilities and Oversight
The IACUC is composed of a diverse group of members, including veterinarians, scientists, and community representatives, all appointed by the Institutional Official. The committee's primary responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and approving all animal use protocols before research or teaching activities commence.
- Conducting semiannual inspections of all animal facilities to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards.
- Providing training for researchers and staff on proper animal care and use.
- Reporting findings to the Vice President for Research and, when necessary, to federal authorities.
