What is the Office of Research?
The Office of Research is the central hub for supporting research, scholarship, innovation, and creative activity at Syracuse University. It facilitates excellence across all disciplines by helping faculty, students, staff, and external partners pursue new knowledge, address societal challenges, and transform ideas into impact.
Core Functions and Services
The Office of Research offers broad support to researchers through multiple dedicated units and programs. Its major functions include:
Proposal Support and Funding Strategy
Assisting with proposal planning and development; circulating funding opportunities; managing internal grant programs; offering competitive intelligence and guidance on funder priorities; building long-term funding trajectories.
Internal Grant Programs and Limited Submissions
Hosting seed grants, bridge funding, and other internal competitions to support early-stage ideas, interdisciplinary collaboration, resubmissions, or special scholarly work (like book projects). Managing “limited submission” opportunities where only a few proposals from SU can be submitted to a given funder.
Policy, Compliance & Integrity
Ensuring research is conducted in accordance with federal, state, and institutional policies involving human subjects, animal care, export control, foreign research relationships, conflict-of-interest, and ethical conduct.
Intellectual Property and Industry Collaboration
Helping researchers protect inventions and innovations, prepare for licensing, working with industry partners, and navigating technology transfer processes.
Researcher Services and Infrastructure
Providing resources like research leave support, computing support, library research services, supply ordering (such as lab supplies and reagents), mentorship programs for students, and access to shared facilities and services.
Training, Presentations and Capacity Building
Offering workshops, trainings, presentation opportunities, and programs to enhance proposal writing, grantsmanship, faculty development, postdoctoral training, and teamwork.
Responsibilities
As part of its mission, the Office of Research is responsible for:
- Fostering a research environment that promotes innovation, equity, and high scientific and ethical standards.
- Coordinating with associate deans, institute directors, and other campus partners to advance research excellence.
- Administering and overseeing internal programs that enhance competitiveness and scholarly output.
- Supporting research administration, ensuring that proposal and award processes, compliance requirements, and ethics oversight are met.
- Measuring, promoting, and communicating the impact of research at Syracuse University.
